Why buying games in Pakistan is the hard part

Most PS4s in Pakistan did not arrive in a sealed box from a shop in your own city. The console came second-hand through a classifieds listing, or in a relative's luggage from abroad, or from a dealer who had a few of them stacked on a shelf. It is a solid machine and there is plenty of life left in it. The trouble starts later — you finish the two or three games it came with, and you go looking for the next one.

The PlayStation Store is sitting right there on the console and it opens fine. Then you reach the payment step and it wants a card it will accept, billing you in dollars. If you do not have a card that works internationally, that is where the evening ends. The console is not the problem. The store is not the problem. Getting money to the other side of it is.

The disc shelf is real, but the maths rarely works

Original discs are genuinely available in Pakistan — dealer shelves in the bigger cities, online listings, the occasional trade with a friend. It would be unfair to say otherwise. The difficulty is what surrounds them.

• The price sits high. A single disc often carries a premium over what the same title costs digitally, and that is before you factor in getting it to your door.
• Selection is thin outside the big cities. In Karachi, Lahore or Islamabad you can usually find someone stocking something. In a smaller city the shelf is a handful of titles, and the one you actually wanted is not on it.
• A damaged disc is money gone. A scratch deep enough to stop the game reading means the purchase is finished. There is no replacement and no refund, and the disc was the entire value.
• Resale is the only way back. With a disc, trading it in is how you recover part of the cost — which means you are storing, protecting and eventually negotiating over a physical object every time you want to move on.

None of that makes discs a bad choice. It simply explains why a bundle that covers five titles at once, arranged locally and paid for in rupees, appeals to a lot of people here.

The payment wall — dollars on a Pakistani card

Both the PlayStation Store and the overseas key sellers bill in dollars on a card. That is the single reason most people give up on buying games digitally here.

• Most cards are issued with international transactions switched off. It is a sensible security default, but it means a foreign charge is rejected before it ever leaves the country.
• PayPak cards cannot process an international payment at all. PayPak is Pakistan's domestic network. Whatever balance is on the card, it will not reach an overseas merchant.
• The international limit is a separate setting. Raising your everyday limit does nothing; the international one has to be changed on its own, and it usually starts at zero.
• A virtual card has to be funded in dollars and kept alive. Loading it is a currency conversion with fees, and an expired or unfunded card quietly fails the next time it is charged.

What a five-game pack actually gets you

A pack is a bundle of five games. That is the honest description, and it is worth being precise about the rest.

You confirm the exact titles with us on WhatsApp before you pay. Nothing is chosen for you and nothing is a surprise. Ask for the list, look at it properly, ask questions about any title on it, and only then decide. If what is available does not suit you, we would rather tell you that up front than take an order you will regret.

Which pack makes sense depends on how you play. If you get a few hours a week, five games is a long runway and you may want breadth more than anything else. If you finish a title in a weekend, tell us that — the mix that keeps someone busy for a month is a different mix from the one that keeps them busy for a year. If you mostly play alone, say so; if the console is shared and half the time it is FIFA with friends, say that too. It changes what we would suggest.

Check your storage before you order. This is the practical point people forget. PS4 drives fill up fast, and a single large title can take a big share of a 500GB drive. Look at what is free under Settings, Storage, and clear out anything you have finished before you add five more. If you are not sure how much room you have, ask us and we will work through it with you.

• PS4 owners who have finished everything they own. The console works, the drive is empty, and paying full retail for the next single title is hard to justify.
• Parents buying for children. Several titles in one go works out better than one expensive disc that gets finished in a fortnight — and there is something else to move on to.
• People who bought a second-hand console with no games. Very common here. The console arrives with maybe one disc, and the machine needs a library before it is worth having.
• Groups of friends sharing one console. When four people play, five games covers far more ground than one disc chosen by whoever paid for it.
